(212) Abide in me, and I in you.

"Abide in me,
and I in you. For unless a branch abides in the vine, it cannot bear fruit by
itself, and neither can you unless you abide in me." (John 15:4)
Those familiar
words quoted above remind us and remind us that it is God who put us in Christ.
We are in Christ, and God tells us to abide in Him! This is God's own decree,
and it is what we should fulfill. “Abide in me and I in you.” That’s a pun—a
command with a promise. In other words, these are two aspects of God's work.
The subjective experience is based on the objective fact. "I live in
you," is the result of "you live in me." We must guard against
being too concerned with subjective experience, just like the branches of the
vine, striving to bear fruit of a certain size or color by themselves. We only
need to pay attention to the objective aspect—"abide in the Lord"—and
let God bear the responsibility for the result, because he has guaranteed it.
As for the quality of the fruit, it is often determined by the vine itself, not
by the branches themselves.
