"No, I have come to be the captain of the army of the Lord." (Joshua 5:14 NIV) Joshua was entrusted to lead the Israelites to deal with the seven powerful tribes in Canaan. Facing this important task, he would undoubtedly feel the difficulty of his responsibilities. But when the Israelites approached the city of Jericho, Joshua saw a vision of a man standing opposite him with a drawn sword in his hand. He couldn't help asking: "Are you helping us? Are you helping our enemies?" The answer was a resolute and affirmative: "No." He will not help this side, nor that side, He came to be the Captai of the Lord's army!
Praise be to God, it is His will that He stand in the position of Captain of His armies. We want everything to circle around and work for our benefit. But God's ordinance is not like this. He is not standing in the midst of the battle, helping a little here or there. For us, the problem is not getting help, but being led by Him. If you think that God is only in a subordinate position in the battle, then you don’t know God. God's place is to lead us. Only then can we understand what it means for him to draw the sword for us.
