教會的根基是基督，但還要加上對基督的認識。今天的悲劇乃是：我們許多人在教會里——或在許多所謂的教會里——都缺乏了后者。我們沒有在里面看見并認識基督。對我們來說，似乎祂是一位理論上和教義上的基督，而不是一位被啟示出來的基督。但理論不能胜過陰間的門，只有照著主耶穌所宣布，有祂作根基，且對祂有認識的教會，才能胜過它。我們或者已忘記了教會在地上的使命与托付。當我探訪西方的家庭時，有時候看見一個瓷碟不是放在桌子上用，而是懸挂在牆上，作為一個珍貴的裝飾品。今天許多基督徒也把教會當作類似的東西，僅僅懂得欣賞其外形上的完美。然而神的教會卻有其實際之功用，絕不是為著外表上的裝飾。若教會只有生命的外貌，在環境順利時，是好像足夠應付一切，但當地獄的權勢出動反對我們時，我們就深深知道，我們每一個人最急切的需要，就是直接從神那里得著祂儿子耶穌基督的异象。在遇到試煉的日子中，只有這种第一手的屬靈認識，才是靠得住的。

The foundation of the church is Christ, but the knowledge of Christ must be included. The tragedy today is that many of us in the church - or in many so-called churches - short of the latter. We do not see and know Christ within the church. It seems to us that Christ is a theoretical and doctrinal one rather than a revealed Christ. But theory cannot overcome the gates of hell. Only the church that has known the Lord Jesus as its foundation, and according to what the Lord Jesus announced can overcome the hell. We may be forgotten the mission and commission of the church on earth. When I visit homes in the Westland, sometimes seeing a porcelain plate not used on the table, but hung on the wall as a precious ornament. Nowaday many Christians treat the church as something like that, only its outward perfection. However, the church of God has its practical function, and it is definitely not for decoration. If the church only has the external appearance of life, as if the environment were good, it would be enough good with everything, but when the power of devil acts against us, we know deeply to get directly from God a vision of His Son, Jesus Christ is the most urgent need for each of us.  In times of temptation, only this first-hand spiritual knowing of Him can be depended upon.
