215 英语词类基本的应用(九) Possessive Noun; Subject, Object, & Possessive Pronoun

215 英语词类基本的应用(九)  Possessive Noun; Subject, Object, & Possessive Pronoun

I, you, he, she, it, we, 和 they.  例如, "John speaks to John's mother, but John's mother does not hear John",  这句子每人读过后, 都会觉得怪怪的, 长得无聊, 而且笨得很.  为什么?  因为通常是这样说,   "John speaks to his mother, but she does not hear him".  是没有使用代名词的缘故, 而造成烦杂多字的句子(a wordy sentence)的毛病. his, she, him  这些单词是代表 John's ,  John's mother 和 John  , 多么简洁明暸.

my aunt's house            the tree's limbs

复数名词的领位名词的行成则比较复杂.  若能把名词的行成复数的各种例证都非常熟悉, 那就简单多了, 只要在本名词后加领号 (') 就完成了.
例如:
my friends' parents       the teachers' classes

但是, 名词的行成复数有不是加 ‘s’ 的.  如单数本名词一样, 不只单单加领号( ' ) , 还要加 s ), 才成为领位名词.
               例如:
the men's shoes           the mice's cheese

练习 :
试将下列短句重写为领位名词.
1. the book by John       John’s book         范例
2. the edge of the knife ________
3. the cover of the book________
4. the speech given by Mayor Ruth ________

6. the bicycle that belongs to the children ________
7. the roar of the sirens ________
8. the colors of the rainbow ________
9. the shoes that Chris owns ________
10.  the purses that belong to the women _______

主位代名词是在句子内作主语或复合主语的一部分.  如,  I, you, he, she, it, we, 和 they.
例如 :
          We are ready to go.

宾位代名词是在句子内作宾语或复合宾语的一部分,  还可以作介词的宾语.  如,  me, you, him, her, it, us, 和 them.
            例如 :
                         Mary gave me a gift.
Mary gave the gift to him.

练习 : 在下列括号内选择对的代名词, 并注明是作主位代名词或宾位代名词.
(Complete each sentence by circling the correct pronoun in parentheses. Then
write subject pronoun or object pronoun to identify the form you used.)

13. (They, Them) are ready to play soccer.
14. Bring (he, him) some paper and a pencil.
15. (He, Him) and his brother will have the same opportunities that women have.

领位代名词用来显示它拥有或具有某些东西.  如,  my, your, his, her, its, our, 和 their 且常常在名词的前面.
            例如 :
Stephen is learning about his ancestors.

有些领位代名词, 如, mine, yours, his, hers, ours, 和 theirs 后面没有名词, 它单独存在 .
            例如 :
The picture is his.
The books are mine.

练习 : 用领位代名词重写各句, 使句子简洁(Rewrite each sentence. Use possessive
pronouns to make the sentence less wordy.)
1. Annie Wang was famous for the shooting ability of Annie Wang.
2. Mr. Wang let her use the gun that he owned.
3. Steve Lee made Annie a star in the show that he had.
4. Annie never missed the target for which she aimed.

214 英语词类基本的应用(八) Direct and Indirect Object

(A direct object is the noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb. A direct object tells who or what receives the action).  如, give, show, send, bring, offer, read, pass, lend, leave, hand, tell, return, write, pay, point, play, save, spare, order, sing, find等动词.

     例如:
                        Ruth loved his parents.
                        I wrote a letter yesterday.
She read this book two weeks ago.

练习:  試試將上面舉例的外動詞, 作一短句.

练习:
试将下列各句的直接宾语下加底线. (Underline the direct object in each sentence.)

1.  The Panama Canal now divides the two continents.
2. It provides a short route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.
3. The United States operated the canal after building it.
4.  Hot gas and ash burned entire forests.
5.  Many residents lost their homes.
6.  My dog eats tomatoes.
7.  He devours potatoes.
8.  My dog wrinkles the covers on the bed.
9.  I flatten the pillows on the sofa.
10.  Mary takes a nap every afternoon.

间接宾语是说明为谁或给谁做出该动作的名词或代名词(An indirect object is the noun or pronoun that tells to whom or for whom the action of the verb is done).

      例如:
      He showed the dog kindness.
I gave him a book yesterday.
                  John told her the facts.

练习:  在各句中的间接宾语下划一条緂线. (Underline the indirect object in each sentence.)

1. The three pals gave their guests a hearty welcome.
2. I sent my friends holiday cards with pictures of the animals.
3. My friends asked me questions about the first meeting.
4. A TV talk show host gave us a spot on her program.
5. An animal-food company sent me boxes of free food.
6. A restaurant owner gave me a free meal.
7. The animals brought my family a lot of public attention.
8. My neighbors bought them new leashes.
9. The animals still gave everyone friendly greetings.
10.  He wrote me a very lovely letter.

间接宾语的位置必须特别要小心, 这是我国年轻喜好学英语的朋友常犯错的地方.  它必须在外动词和直接宾语之间.(The position of indirect object is always located between transit verb and direct object.)

      例如:
I sent him my book.  (sent 是外动词,  my book 是直接宾语.)
Mary gave me a present.  (gave 是外动词,  a present 是直接宾语.)
Ted taught him English.  (taught 是外动词, English 是直接宾语.)

练习: 试用间接宾语重写下列各句.  (Rewrite each sentence, using an indirect object.)

1. Angela told a secret to Peter.
2. Peter gave his promise of silence to Paul.
3. Mr. Mark was giving a surprise party for Ryan.
4. He had sent an invitation to Ann.
5. Mrs. Miller handed an invitation to Peter.
6. Don asked a question of Mrs. Miller.

[注] : 读完此讲之后, 是否在写简单句子没有太大的困难.  试试看.

例如 :  I gave him a candy.
            He replied my question.
            You told her a story
            Don asked her question.

213 基本动词应用(七) Transitive and Intransitive Verb

I ate my lunch an hour ago. “ate” 和 “eat” 是全然不同的发音.  在这里又证明大声的在早晨头脑清醒时朗诵英语的好处.  使你熟悉字词的发音.  还有你必须记住, 否则你要写过去时制的句子就很困难, 更不要说写完了时态(perfect aspect)的句子, 如, I have eaten my dinner.

现在要谈的是两种不同的动词的种类, 也非常要紧.  外动词(v.t.)及内动词(v.i.), 前人翻译为及物动词和不及物动词, 也很好, 因为它顾到这两类动词的使用目的.  外动词是要顾及有宾语来接受它的动作, 例如, I wrote him a letter yesterday. 中的write是外动词, 它必须要两个宾语来完成这句子的意思. 其中him 是间接宾语(indirect object), 而 a letter 是直接宾语(direct object).

(A transitive verb is an action verb that is followed by a noun or a pronoun that receives the action).
例如:           I know the story.
                                     名词
Stephen drove the car most of the way.
                                                     名词
He gave  me a book last week.
(me 代名词, 是间接宾语,  book 名词, 是直接宾语)

[注] : 红字是外动词, 其后面都必须跟有名词或代名词来接受它的动作.

内动词是任何不需要宾语用来接受它的动作的动作动词, 并包括所有的连系动词在内(An intransitive verb includes all linking verbs and any action verbs that do not take an object).
    例如:           My friends cried.
                        The cat bristled.
The children rode in the back seat.

[注] : 红字是内动词, 其后面都没有跟名词或代名词, 而只有最后一句後面跟随前置词短语, 不是它的宾语.

练习:  试在每句的动词下加于一横线, 然后注明它是外动词或内动词:
Underline the verb in each sentence.  Label it transitive or intransitive.

1. Our family went to the Grand Canyon last month.
2. I got a cat from the former tenants.
3. Ruth and the dog sat quietly on the sofa.
4. He drove for miles through the desert.
5. The dog would see me soon.
6. Paul saw the canyon first.
7. Ted loved the shepherd!
8. The next day the caretaker did stop.
9. John had found a home on the mountain.
10. The workers had built a sturdy metal fence.
