16758英翻中(馬太福音13章-王的秘密 II) The Outcome of the Kingdom 属天国度的实现 5/10/2026
3. The Realization of the Heavenly Kingdom (13:44-50)
In the last days, God has three nations: the Jews (the hidden treasure), the church (the pearl), and the Gentile nations who will be saved and enter the Kingdom of Heaven (the trawl net).
The Hidden Treasure (verse 44). The common interpretation of this parable is that the sinner finds Christ and gives up everything he has to gain Him and be saved. But this interpretation has some problems. First, Jesus Christ is not a hidden treasure. He is perhaps the most famous historical figure. Second, the sinner cannot “find Christ” because he is blind and hardened-hearted (Romans 3:10, cf.). It is the Savior who seeks the lost sinner (Luke 19:10). No sinner can buy salvation! Note that the man in the parable did not buy a treasure; he bought the entire field. “This field is the world” (Matthew 13:38). Must the lost sinner first buy the world to gain Christ? And has He hidden Him?
The symbolism of the Old Testament once again helps us interpret this. The treasure represents the nation of Israel (Exodus 19:5; Psalm 135:4). That nation was placed in the world to glorify God, but it failed. It became a hidden nation; the treasure was not invested in production to earn dividends for God. Jesus Christ offered all that He had to buy the whole world in order to save all nations (John 11:51). On the cross, Jesus died for the whole world, but in a special way for the nation of Israel (Isaiah 53:8). Even though the nation suffers judgment and seems destroyed, in God's eyes it is "hidden" and will be revealed again in glory.
Therefore, the nation of Israel has a future. Politically, the nation of Israel reappeared on May 14, 1948. But a nation is far more than it should be spiritually manifested. God sees Israel as His treasure, and one day He will rebuild her, making her a glorious nation.
The Priceless Pearl (verses 45-46). A well-known gospel hymn has long interpreted this parable, the pearl representing Jesus Christ and His salvation. However, the same objections to previous parables also apply to this one. Sinners cannot find Christ; it is Christ who seeks sinners. No sinner can afford the price of salvation, even if he sells everything he owns.
The pearl represents the church. The distinction between Jews, Gentiles, and the church is clearly analyzed in the Bible (1 Corinthians 10:32). Today, the church—the body of Christ—is composed of Jews and Gentiles who believe in Him (Ephesians 2:2:11, cf.). Unlike most other gemstones, the pearl is a strong bond—it cannot be carved like a diamond or emerald. The church is a unified body (Ephesians 4:4-6), even if the earthly self-proclaimed church is divided. Like the pearl, the church is a product of suffering. Christ's death for the church (Ephesians 5:25) and His suffering on the cross gave birth to her.
As the Holy Spirit condemns sinners to Jesus, the church grows gradually like a pearl. No one can see the growth of a pearl because it is hidden beneath the oyster shell underwater. No one can see the growth of Jesus' church in the world. Today, the church exists in all nations (the water in the Bible represents nations; Daniel 7:1-3; Revelation 13:1; 17:15). One day, the church will reveal its beauty.
Therefore, while Satan does subtle work in this world, Christ is forming His church. He sold everything He owned to buy the church; Satan is powerless to make Jesus fail. Although there are many local churches, there is only one church, a pearl of great value. Not everyone who is a member of a local church belongs to this one church, the body of Christ. Only those who repent and have faith in Christ can become members of His church. Of course, all true believers should identify with those who worship and serve in their local church.
Fishing net (47-50 sections). Preaching the gospel in the world cannot convert all people. It's like pulling in a huge fishing net; there are good fish and bad fish in it. The same is true of those who call themselves the church today; among them are true believers and false ones (the parable of the tares), good and bad. In the coming of these last days, God will separate the true believers from the false, the good and the bad. When Jesus Christ returns, in the Archimedes' final battle (refer to Revelation 19:11), He will distinguish between those who are already true believers and those who are not. They are living people, not part of the church (already in heaven) or in Israel. These Gentiles will be treated with righteousness: the saved will enter the kingdom, but the unsaved will be thrown into the furnace. A similar idea can be found in the parable of the sheep and the goats (refer to Matthew 25:31).
In this series of parables, Jesus uses the phrase "the last days" twice (Matthew 13:39, 49). He is not referring to the end of the "church age," because Jesus shared the truth about the church and the last days with his disciples later (Matthew 16:18). The "last days" He refers to are the last days described in Matthew 24:1-31 and Revelation 6-19, referring to the Jewish era at the end of the Great Tribulation. It is important not to be prejudiced against Matthew's description when comparing these parables with the truths later presented by Paul and other apostles.
When Jesus finished this series of parables, he asked his disciples if they understood, and they confidently answered, "Yes, Lord." Understanding is related to responsibility. To explain this, the Lord further reminds them of their responsibility with the final parable (Matthew 13:51-52).
They must be scribes who discover truth. The scribes, under Ezra's leadership, began as a noble group. Their aim was to uphold the law, study it, and apply its truth to daily life. Over the years, their noble cause degenerated into mundane tasks such as preserving tradition and human interpretation, adding to the burdens of people's lives (Luke 11:46-52). In the past, they had devoted themselves to inquiry; now they neglected it! They were not sharing the truth of life from God's Word; they were peddling doctrines of death and the ineffective tradition of "embalming."
As believers, we do not seek truth because we already have the truth of the Son of God (John 14:6) and receive truth from God's Word (John 17:17). We are taught by the Holy Spirit of truth (John 16:13), who is truth (1 John 5:6). By delving deeper into truth, we may discover more of the truth. We are scribes sitting at Jesus' feet —students—listening to His word. One of the joys of the Christian life is the privilege of learning God's truth from God's Word. But we cannot stop there. They must be disciples who practice the truth. "Therefore every scribe will become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven…" This is a more accurate translation of Matthew 13:52. Scribes emphasize learning, while disciples emphasize practical application. Disciples are the implementers of God's word (cf. James 1:22), learning through practice.
Maintaining a balance in life is not easy. We often emphasize sacrificing our lives to maintain balance as the price of learning. Or, we are so busy serving God that we neglect to listen to His word. Every scribe should be a disciple, and every disciple must be a scribe.
They must be stewards who practice the truth. Scribes preserved the law but did not apply it to people's lives. The treasure of the law is influenced by human tradition. Seeds cannot bear fruit if they are not planted. "Spiritual gold and silver" will only yield dividends if they are not put into work. As Christians, we should hold fast, not cling to the old ways.
The steward guarded the treasure, but he also used it as needed. He implemented both the old and the new. New principles and insights were based on old truths. The new cannot contradict the old, for they originate from the old (Leviticus 26:10). The new without the old is merely novel and will not last. But the old is of no benefit unless it provides a new application in today's life. We need both.
After Jesus finished these parables, He crossed the stormy Sea of Galilee to reach the nation of Ghazalak and save those afflicted by demons. Matthew records this in 8:28-34. Then Jesus went to His hometown of Nazareth, an event recorded in 13:53-58.
Two things astonished the people of Nazareth: the Lord's word and His work. However, their disbelief in Jesus limited His work. What caused them to doubt Jesus? Because He grew up among them, lived with them in a human way, and they were too familiar with Him. They knew Him through His physical example (see 2 Corinthians 5:16), and those who submitted to Jesus did not possess the spiritual discernment God had given them (Matthew 11:25-30). They followed Jesus by sight, not by faith.
If even Jesus' own friends and family did not trust in Him, how could the nation of Israel have any hope of believing in Him? In His early ministry, He had preached in Nazareth (Luke 4:16-31) and had been rejected by them; now He was rejected again. This was Jesus' last visit to Nazareth; those villagers would not have another chance. Jesus would be called "Jesus of Nazareth," and His followers would be called "Nazareth," but the people of Nazareth did not accept Jesus. Matthew chose this event as a continuation of the "rebellion of the rival king" section.
