「你們要休息，要知道我是神！我必在外邦中被尊崇，在遍地上也必被尊崇。」（詩46:10）

如果神的寶座似乎在動搖，難道我們的手能使它穩定么？有些人以為能夠，雅各就是其中之一。神已經很清楚的對他明說，他一定掌權，但他在所行事上，卻是惟恐不及的靠自己去推進神的計划。他看見神的選召，并緊握這個大福——但到有一天，他知道他父親差遣以掃去打獵，為要給以掃祝福。如果這件事實現了，神的應許豈不是落空了么？

于是他就必須有所行動了！這個聰明而又有才干的人，同時又是一個謀略的策划者。他著手為神工作，好像神是無能為力似的。他為要達到所追求的目的，不惜欺騙他的父親。可是所有從欺騙中似乎得著的，他不得不放棄，并且被迫离家遠游。不錯，他是神所揀選的，神要他，然而在那時他卻不認識神，也不認識自己。他實際上所得著的，乃是一次嚴厲的屬靈管教。這類管教，聰明的人所遇最多！

"Be still and know that I am God! I will be exalted among the Gentiles, and I will be exalted in all the earth" (Psalm 46:10)

If the throne of God seems to be tottering, can our hand make it steady? Some thought they could, and Jacob was one of them. God has clearly stated to him that he must be in power, but in everything he does, he is afraid to rely on himself to advance God's plan. He saw God's calling, and he held onto the great blessing—but one day he knew that his father had sent Esau to hunt in order to bless Esau. If this happened, wouldn't God's promise come to nothing?

So he had to do something! This clever and capable man is also a strategic planner. He sets out to work for God as if God were powerless. He did not hesitate to deceive his father in order to achieve the object he was after. But all that he seemed to gain by deceit, he had to give up, and was forced to travel far from home. Yes, he was chosen by God, and God wanted him, but at that time he did not know God, nor did he know himself. What he actually received was a severe spiritual discipline. This kind of discipline is encountered most by wise people!
