Lesson 9 ( Chapter 11 - 12) The conflict between Kingship Gospe Matthew 11 -12
All the evidence has been presented. John the Baptist introduced the King to the nation of Israel. Jesus had revealed His humanity, principles, and power to them. Now it was time for the nation's leaders to make a decision. Instead of accepting the King, they began to oppose Him. These two chapters present four examples of such opposition.
1. The Prophets Who Rebeled Against Him (11:1-30)
Explanation (verses 1-15). Because John the Baptist boldly condemned Herod Antipas and Herodias's adultery, Herod imprisoned him in the fortress of Machaerus (Luke 3:19-20). It seemed the Jewish leaders would oppose Herod and try to persuade John, but they did nothing. Their attitude towards John reflected their feelings towards Jesus, for John had spoken of Jesus and respected Him.
It was not difficult to sympathize with John the Baptist when he suffered in prison. He had been a man who cried out in the desert, but now he was imprisoned indoors. He had been a preacher divinely appointed by God, but now he was silent. He was tried, but the verdict came slowly (Matthew 3:7-12). John the Baptist only received partial reports about Jesus' ministry and could not see the whole picture.
Our Lord's reply to John revealed both tact and tendlerness. He reminded John of the prophecies in the Old Testament concerning the Messianic ministry (Isaiah 29:18-19; 35:4-6). John's disciples had already told him about the ministry Jesus was doing (Luke 7:18), but Jesus asked them to "tell John again." This brought John into the spiritual realm and the power of Elijah (Luke 1:17), even Elijah had his days of despair! Jesus assured John that he was fulfilling the Father's will.
After answering John, Jesus praised him. John was not a "popular preacher" pandering to the masses, nor was he like a reed in the wind, swaying uncertainly. He was a man of faith and courage, the greatest prophet. John was fortunate to have been allowed to proclaim the Messianic truth, receiving such high honor. His ministry was the pinnacle of the Law and the Prophets.
What did the phrase "Elijah is coming" mean to John the Baptist (Matthew 11:14)? He came into the world with the spirit and power of Elijah (Luke 1:17), and even his clothing and ministry were like Elijah's (2 Kings 1:7-8; Matthew 3:4). John came into the world like Elijah to judge the rebellious nation of Israel. John's ministry included prophecy (Isaiah 40:3) and fulfilling it. But Malachi 4:5 prophesies the coming of Elijah “before the great and terrible day of the Lord.” This “day of the Lord” will bring calamity to the whole world (see Matthew 24:15). But judgment will not come after John the Baptist. Why?
John's ministry was to prepare the way of Jesus for the whole nation of Israel and to present Jesus to that nation (Luke 1:15-17; John 1:29-34). If people accepted John’s testimony and embraced their Messiah, John might have fulfilled the prophecy of Jesus' coming in reality. In fact, it is shown in the spiritual life of those who believe in Christ. Jesus clearly points this out in Matthew 17:10-13. Bible students believe Malachi 4:5 will be fulfilled when Elijah becomes one of the “two witnesses” mentioned in Revelation 11.
The common people held John the Baptist in high regard (Matthew 21:26), and many among them had repented and accepted his baptism. But the leaders refused to honor John, demonstrating their unbelief and hardened hearts. Instead of childlike humility and modesty, the leaders became childlike and stubborn, like noisy children, because they could not grasp their own thoughts. The parable in Matthew 11:16-19 reveals the spiritual condition of the leaders, and unfortunately, it also reveals the mind of unbelievers today.
Condemnation (verses 16-24). It is unusual to find “Woe to you” in Jesus’ words! It carries the meaning of “judgment,” but it also includes mercy and sorrow. How could these cities be so wretched? They should have had the opportunity to see and hear the Christ of God and be saved! The Gentile cities of Tyre and Sidon, and the godless cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, would have repented if they had seen the miracles performed by Jesus and His disciples. Capernaum, the city “exalted to heaven,” was honored to have the Messiah live there. However, this greater honor brought with it greater responsibility and judgment. Five out of ten miracles recorded in Matthew 8-9 were performed in Capernaum.
The Invitation (verses 25-30). Why did the religious leaders rebel against John and Jesus? Because they (the leaders) were proud, both intellectually and spiritually, unlike the humble and honest children. There is a great difference between the spoiled child in the parable of Matthew 11:16-19 and the child who obeys because of praise. The Father reveals Himself to the Son, and He reveals Himself and the Father to those who are willing to come to the Son in faith. These verses demonstrate the Father's sovereignty and the responsibility of sinners. The three commands—Come, take the yoke, learn—summarize the meaning of the invitation.
“Come,” the Pharisees said. “Do!” and tried to get people to follow Moses and tradition. But true salvation can only be found in one person: Jesus Christ. Coming to Jesus means trusting in Him. For those who are weary, this invitation is to lay down their burdens. This is precisely the burden people feel under the shackles of Pharisee legalism (Matthew 23:4; Acts 15:10).
“Bearing the yoke.” This implies a deeper experience. When we come to Christ in faith, He gives us rest. When we take on His yoke and learn, we find rest, a deeper rest of commitment and obedience. First, there is “peace with God” (Romans 5:1); second, there is “the peace of God” (Philippians 4:6-8). In those times, taking on “chains” meant becoming a disciple of Jesus. When committed to Christ, we are “chains” to Him. Lightness means “perfectly appropriate”; Jesus simply tailored the chains for our lives and needs. The burden of obeying His will is light, not heavy (1 John 5:3).
“Learning.” The first two commands, “Come,” and the yoke, represent crisis; but when we come to Christ and commit ourselves to Him, this step is a process. As we learn more about Him, we find a deeper peace because we trust Him more. The life of those who live around Christ is simplified and unified. This invitation is for "all"—not just for the Israelites (Matthew 10:5-60).
2. Rebellion against Jesus' principles (12:1-21)
Jesus deliberately violated the Sabbath tradition on several occasions. He had taught them that outward obedience to the law alone could never bring salvation or sanctification; true righteousness must come from within. The Hebrew word "sabat" means "rest or respite," which explains why Matthew raises the Sabbath conflict here. Jesus provides rest for all who come to Him; there is no Sabbath as a purely religious holiday.
The law states that it is lawful to go to your neighbor's field and gather buds of grain to eat when you are hungry (Deuteronomy 23:24-25). But doing so on the Sabbath violated the legal tradition of the scribes and Pharisees, because it meant working on the Sabbath. Jesus responds to their accusations by citing three historical example。
