If a man suddenly appears and claims to be king, the public immediately demands proof. What is his background? Who is loyal to him? What evidence can he provide? Matthew considered these important questions, and he carefully opened his Gospel, which records the birth of Jesus Christ and the events that accompanied it. He presented four facts concerning the existence of a king.
The Heredity of the King (1:1-25)
Since royalty depends on succession, it was important to establish Jesus' right to the throne of David. Matthew wrote about His earthly succession (Matthew 1:1-17) and His heavenly succession (Matthew 1:18-25).
His earthly inheritance (verses 1-17). Genealogies were extremely important to Jews because without them they could not prove their identity or their right to inherit property. Anyone claiming to be “the son of David” had to be able to prove his identity. It is generally believed that Matthew wrote the genealogy of our Lord from Jesus’ foster father Joseph, while Luke wrote the lineage of His family from His mother Mary (Luke 3:23, cf.).
Many Bible readers skip over this ancient (sometimes pronounced) genealogy written by Matthew. But this “list” is an important part of the Gospel account. It shows that the life of Jesus Christ is part of history, and all Jewish history prepared the way for His birth. God fulfilled His great purpose in His heavenly rule and dominion by bringing His Son into the world.
This genealogy also illustrates God’s wondrous grace. It is difficult to find female names in Jewish genealogies because names and inheritance are paternal. However, in Old Testament history, this genealogy contains the names of four women: Tamar (Matthew 1:3), Rahab and Ruth (Matthew 1:5), and Uriah's wife in Bathsheba (Matthew 1:6).
Matthew clearly omitted some names from his genealogy. Perhaps he did this to provide a systematic overview of three periods in Israel's history, each with fourteen generations. The Hebrew letter "David" has fourteen strokes. Matthew may have used this method as a mnemonic device to help his readers remember the genealogy more easily.。
However, many Jews can trace their lineage back to King David. For Jesus Christ to be the “Son of David” and heir to the throne, far more than earthly lineage was required. This is why heavenly succession is so important.
His Heavenly Succession (verses 18-25). Matthew 1:16 and 18 clearly show that the birth of Jesus Christ was different from the birth of any other Jewish boy. Matthew points out that Joseph had no connection to the “birth” of Jesus Christ. In other words, Joseph was merely “Mary’s husband, but he did not have intercourse with her; Jesus was born of her alone, and he is called the Messiah.” Jesus was born of an earthly mother, but did not need an earthly father. This is the so-called doctrine of virginity.
Every child born into the world is a completely new being. But Jesus Christ is the eternal God (John 1:1, 14), existing long before Mary and Joseph or any of His earthly ancestors. If Jesus Christ were conceived and born like any other child, then He could not be God. He must have entered the world through an earthly mother, not begotten by an earthly father. Through the miracle of the Holy Spirit, Jesus was conceived in the womb of the Virgin Mary (Luke 1:26-38).
Some people have raised the question that perhaps Mary wasn't a virgin. They say Matthew 1:23 should be translated as "young woman". However, in this passage, the word "virgin" is always translated as an unmarried virgin, not as a "young woman."
At that time, the king was a Jewish male and the holy Son of God. But did anyone acknowledge His kingship? Yes, the wise men from the East worshipped Him."
Mary and Joseph both belonged to the House of David. The Old Testament prophesies that the Messiah will be born of a virgin (Genesis 3:15), a descendant of Abraham (Genesis 22:18), belonging to the tribe of Judah (Genesis 49:10), and from the House of David (2 Zechariah 7:12-13). Matthew's genealogy goes through the House of Solomon, while Luke's genealogy traces back to Nathan, another son of David. It should be noted that Jesus Christ is the only living Jew who can testify that He is worthy to succeed David to the throne! All other historical records were destroyed when the Romans occupied Jerusalem in 70 AD.
In those days, engagement was equivalent to marriage—except the man and woman did not live together. They called each other "husband and wife," and the marriage was completed at the end of the engagement period. If the engaged virgin became pregnant, this was considered adultery (see Deuteronomy). (22:13-21). But when Joseph found her with the child, he did not punish Mary or divorce her, because the Lord revealed the truth to him. All of this fulfills Isaiah 7:14.
Before leaving this important part of the discussion, we must consider the three names of the Son of God. The name Jesus means “Savior,” derived from the Hebrew name Joshua (“Jehovah is salvation”). Many Jewish boys are called Joshua (or Jesus in Greek), but Mary’s child is called “Jesus Christ.” Christ means “Anointed One”; equivalent to the Greek Messiah. He is “Jesus---Messiah.” Jesus is His personal name; Christ is His official title; Emmanuel describes who He is—“God with us.” "Jesus Christ is God! We find the name 'Immanuel' in Isaiah 7:14 and 8:8.
Loyalty to the King (2:1-12)
We must admit that we know very little about these Magi. The translation of "magi" refers to a group of intelligent people who studied astrology. Their title is associated with magicians, but they were perhaps more like astrologers. However, they are among the few astrologers recorded in the Bible who contributed little to the heavenly realm.
God gave them a special sign: a miraculous star announced the birth of the King. This star led them to Jerusalem, where God's prophets told them that the King would be born in Bethlehem. They went to Bethlehem, where they worshipped Christ.
We do not know how many Magi there were. From the three gifts listed in Matthew 2:11, some believe there were only three kings from the East, but this is uncertain. However, the arrival of their chariots in Jerusalem was enough to cause trouble for the entire city.
Remember, these were all Gentiles. From the beginning, Jesus was "the Savior of the world" (John 4:42). These men were also wealthy; they were scholars—scientists themselves. No scholar who follows the light given to him by God might miss coming to Jesus' feet to worship. In Jesus Christ, "all the stores of wisdom and knowledge are hidden" (Colossians 2:3). In Him dwells "for in him all the fullness of the nature of God dwells bodily" (Colossians 2:9).
The Magi were searching for a king, but Herod feared him and wanted to destroy him. He was the so-called Herod the Great, who, due to the influence of Mark Antony, was called king by the Roman Senate. Herod was a cruel and cunning man who would not allow anyone, not even his own family, to interfere with his rule or prevent the satisfaction of his evil desires. He was a ruthless murderer; he suspected his wife and two brothers of treason and had them executed for it. To satisfy his desires and strengthen his political connections, he married at least nine times.
It cannot be denied that Herod attempted to kill Jesus because Herod alone held the title of "King of the Jews." But there was another reason. Herod was not of pure Jewish descent; he was actually an Idumaean, a descendant of Esau. This is a picture of the old struggle between Esau and Jacob, a struggle that began even before their birth (Genesis 25:19-34). It is a battle between the spiritual and the flesh, between godliness and the world.
The Magi were searching for this King; King Herod opposed this King; the Jewish priests ignored this King. The priests knew the Bible pointed others to the Savior, yet they themselves did not go to worship Him! They quoted Micah 5:2, but did not obey it. They were only five miles from the Son of God, yet they did not go to see Him! The Gentiles sought and found Him, but the Jews did not.
Matthew 2:9 shows that this miraculous star was not always visible to the Magi. As they began their journey toward Bethlehem, they saw the star again; it guided them to Jesus' house. Up to this point, Joseph had moved Mary and the infant from their temporary dwelling away from the place of Jesus' birth (Luke 2:7). The traditional account of the shepherds and wise men gathering in the manger is not consistent with the biblical meaning, as the wise men arrived much later.
Matthew cites a second prophecy to confirm that Jesus Christ is King (Matthew 2:5). The manner of His birth fulfilled the prophecy, and the place of His birth also fulfilled it. Bethlehem means "the place where bread is produced" and is the place where the "bread of life" came to earth (John 6:48, comparative study). Bethlehem in the Old Testament is associated with David, whose suffering and glory are linked to the image of Jesus Christ.
Animosity towards the King (2:13-18)
A person can be recognized not only by his friends but also by his enemies. King Herod pretended to want to worship the newborn King (Matthew 2:8), but in reality, he wanted to destroy Him. God warned Joseph to take the child and Mary and flee to Egypt. Egypt was nearby. There were many Jews there, and the gifts from the Magi were enough to cover their travel and living expenses. But another prophecy in Hosea 11:1, "I called my son to Egypt," was also fulfilled.
Herod's anger proved his pride; he could not allow anyone to fully exploit him, especially some Gentile scholars! This led to his killing of male infants two years and under in Bethlehem. We cannot imagine hundreds of boys being killed, because in a small village like Bethlehem, there were not many boys that old. Even today, in a place with only about 20,000 people, perhaps no more than twenty children would be killed. But even one killed is too many!
Matthew is here to introduce the theme of hostility, which is the focus throughout the book. Satan is a deceiver and murderer (John 8:44), just like Herod. He deceived the Magi, and he murdered the infants. Even this horrific crime of murder was fulfilled in the prophecy of Jeremiah 31:15. To understand the fulfillment of this prophecy, it is necessary to revisit Jewish history. The first mention of Bethlehem in the Bible relates to the death of Rachel, Jacob's beloved wife (Genesis 35:16-20). Rachel died after giving birth to a son, whom she named Benjamin, meaning "my sorrowful son." Jacob changed his name to Benjamin, "the son of my right hand." Both names are associated with Jesus Christ, for He was "a man of sorrow, familiar with sorrow" (Isaiah 53:3), and He is now the Son of God's right hand (Acts 5:31; Hebrews 1:3). Jacob erected a pillar near Bethlehem to mark Rachel's tomb.
Jeremiah's prophecy was spoken approximately six hundred years before Christ's birth. It stemmed from the imprisonment in Jerusalem. Some captives were taken to Ramah of Benjamin, near Jerusalem, and Rachel's death reminded Jeremiah of Jacob's sorrow. However, it was now Rachel who was weeping. When they saw their son imprisoned, she wept on behalf of the mother of Israel. It's as if Rachel said, "I lost my life for this son, and now he has no descendants."
Jacob saw Bethlehem as a place of death, but the birth of Jesus made it a place of life! Because of His coming, Israel will have spiritual salvation, and in the future, the throne of David and the establishment of a kingdom. Israel, "my grieving son," will one day become "the son of my right hand." Jeremiah promised the nation of Israel that they would regain their land (Jeremiah 31:16-17), and this promise was fulfilled. But he gave even greater hope that the nation of Israel would be restored to its former glory in the future (Jeremiah 31:27). This promise should also be fulfilled.
Very few people today think of Bethlehem as a place of burial; they think of it as the birthplace of Jesus Christ. Because He died and rose again for us, giving us a bright future. We will live with Him forever in that glorious city, a place where there will be no more death, a place where tears will never fall again.
The Hummility of the King (2:19-23)
Herod died in 4 BC, indicating that Jesus was born between 6 BC and 5 BC. The parallel between Matthew 2:20 and the account of Moses’ calling in Exodus 4:19 must be understood in this light. As the Son of God, Jesus was called out of Egypt to Israel; similarly, Moses had once fled to Egypt for safety and was later called to return there. In both instances, God’s plan involved redemption. Joseph needed courage to leave Egypt with his family, just as Moses needed courage to return there.
Archelaus was Herod's son, and he sought to claim the title of king. However, the Jewish people found that—despite his initial promises of goodwill—he was just as wicked as his father. Consequently, they sent a delegation to Rome to protest his coronation. Augustus Caesar sided with the Jewish people and allowed Archelaus to inherit only half of his father's kingdom. (Jesus likely had this episode of Jewish history in mind when He told the Parable of the Ten Minas in Luke 19:11–27.)
Overall, this serves as a prime example of how God guides His children. Joseph realized that his family would be no safer under Archelaus’s rule than they had been under Herod the Great. They likely discovered that Archelaus had ascended the throne just as they were preparing to return to Bethlehem. Naturally, Joseph and Mary prayed, waited, and sought God’s will. Common sense urged caution, while faith called for patience. It was then that God instructed Joseph in a dream to take his wife and the child to Nazareth, leading them to their home (Matthew 2:19–20).
Even this fulfilled prophecy! Matthew once again highlights that every detail of Jesus’ life was foretold in the Scriptures. It is worth noting that Matthew emphasizes the words of *prophets* (plural); in Matthew 2:23, he states, "so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled." Nowhere in the Bible is there a specific prophecy explicitly stating that Jesus would be called a "Nazarene." "Nazarene" was a term of derision: "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" (John 1:46). Many Old Testament prophecies speak of the Messiah’s humble life and rejection—themes Matthew likely had in mind (see Psalm 22; Isaiah 53:2–3, 8). The label "Nazarene" was applied to both Jesus and His followers (Acts 24:5), and He was frequently referred to as "Jesus of Nazareth" (Matthew 21:11; Mark 14:67; John 18:5, 7).
Perhaps, led by the Holy Spirit, Matthew saw a connection between the place "Nazareth" and the Hebrew word *netzer*, meaning "branch" or "shoot." Several prophets applied this title to Jesus (see Isaiah 4:2; 11:1; Jeremiah 23:5; 33:15; Zechariah 3:8; 6:12–13).
Our Lord grew up in Nazareth and identified with the town. In fact, Jesus' enemies assumed He was born there, noting that He came from Galilee (John 7:50–52). Had they consulted the temple records, they would have discovered that He was actually born in Bethlehem.
Who has ever heard of a king born in an obscure village and raised in a despised town? This humble King is truly worthy of glory and emulation (Philippians 2:1–13).
