16744 英翻中 (馬太福音5章 '登山寶訓') The Sermon on the Mount (The Beatitudes) 登山寶訓(八福) 09/09/2026

16744 英翻中 (馬太福音5章 )      The Sermon on the Mount     登山寶訓(八福)                          09/09/2026

Part Four                 The Sermon on the Mount (The Beatitudes)                          Matthew Chapter 5

The Sermon on the Mount is one of the most easily misunderstood of Jesus' teachings to his disciples. One Bible study group says it's God's plan of salvation, and that we must follow these rules if we hope to go to heaven. Another group calls it a "World Peace Charter," requiring all nations on earth to accept it. Still others tell us the Sermon on the Mount doesn't apply today, but it will apply in the future, perhaps after the Great Tribulation or the Millennium Kingdom.

I've always felt that the key to the important sermon recorded in Matthew 5:20, "I tell you, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and the Pharisees," is true righteousness. Some religious leaders have a righteousness based on artificial constructs outside the law. But the righteousness Jesus describes is real and crucial true righteousness, starting from within, from the heart. The Pharisees focused on the subtle details of people's outward behavior, but they neglected the fundamental issue of character. Behavior flows from one's inner character.

Our Lord, as a teacher, did not begin the Sermon on the Mount with a negative attitude, criticizing the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees. He began with a positive attitude, emphasizing the upright character and blessings that it brings to His believers. The Pharisees taught that righteousness is something external, about obeying rules and regulations, and about the law. Righteousness can be tested through prayer, charity, fasting, and so on. In the believer's "mindset" and "image," Jesus described the Christian character as flowing from the heart.

This is Regardless of how the Sermon on the Mount is applied to world issues or future events, its application is clearly relevant to us today. Jesus shared this message with every believer, not just the unsaved majority of the world. The Sermon on the Mount is repeatedly taught in the New Testament epistles of the church today. Jesus originally intended to share these words with His disciples (Matthew 5:1), teaching them to share the Sermon on the Mount with us.

In this chapter, Jesus presents three points explainations about true, spiritual righteousness.

       What is true righteousness (5:1-16)

Our Lord, as a teacher, did not begin the Sermon on the Mount with a negative attitude, criticizing the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees. He began with a positive attitude, emphasizing the upright character and blessings that it brings to His believers. The Pharisees taught that righteousness is something external, about obeying rules and regulations, and about the law. Righteousness can be tested through prayer, charity, fasting, and so on. In the believer's "mindset" and "image," Jesus described the Christian character as flowing from the heart.

Imagine how the crowd's attention was drawn firmly to Jesus uttering His first words: "Blessed are you." (The Latin word for "blessing" is "beatus," from which the Beatitudes evolved.) Hearing Jesus speak these words at that time was a powerful experience. For them, it meant "heavenly joy and perfect joy." It wasn't meant to be spoken to men; it described the joy experienced by God or the dead. "Blessed" means inner contentment and sufficient happiness, independent of external influences. This is the blessing the Lord bestows upon those who rely on Him!
想象人群的注意力是如何被吸引的, 是牢牢的由耶稣说出祂的第一句话:“有福了。”( “祝福” 的拉丁文是 “beatus”,从此演变出 “beatitude”  八福。)在当时听到耶稣讲这道是很有能力的话语。这对他们意味着, “属天的喜乐和完美的喜乐。” 它不是用来对人说的;

The   Beatitudes   describe the   atitudesthat out to be in our lives   today.     Four   atitudes   are described  here.

Our attitude toward ourselves (verse 3). Spiritual poverty means humility, a correct self-assessment (Romans 12:3). This does not mean “spiritual poverty” and not a lack of ambition! “Spiritual poverty” is the opposite of the world’s attitude toward self-praise and self-affirmation. It is not false humility saying, “I am useless; I can do nothing!” But it is honest about ourselves: we understand ourselves, accept ourselves, and strive to be the glory of God in ourselves.

Our attitude toward sin (verses 4-6, etc.). We mourn for sin and despise it. We see sin as God’s attitude and deal with it in God’s way. Those who cover up or defend sin are certainly wrong. Not only should we mourn for sin, but we must also obey God gently (see Luke 18:9-14; Philippians 3:1-14).

Moses and Jesus were gentle men, and gentle men are not weak men (Numbers 12:3; Matthew 11:29). The Greek translation of “gentle” describes a horse without reins. It refers to the ability being controlled.

Beatitudes describe the mindset we should adopt in our lives today. Here are four mindsets:

Our attitude towards ourselves (verse 3). Spiritual poverty means humility, a correct assessment of oneself (Romans 12:3). This doesn't mean "spiritual poverty" and not a lack of ambition! "Spiritual poverty" is the opposite of the world's attitude of self-praise and self-affirmation. It's not false humility saying, "I am useless; I can do nothing!" Rather, it's honest self-reflection: we understand ourselves, accept ourselves, and strive to be the glory of God.

Our attitude towards sin (verses 4-6, etc.). We mourn for sin and despise it. We see sin as God's attitude and deal with it in God's way. Those who cover up or defend sin are certainly wrong. Not only should we mourn for sin, but we must also submit gently to God (see Luke 18:9-14; Philippians 3:1-14).

Our attitude toward the Lord (verses 7-9). When we trust in Christ, we experience God's mercy (Ephesians 2:4-7), and He gives us a pure heart (Acts 15:9) and inner peace (Romans 5:1). But after receiving His mercy, we must share it with others. Strive to keep our hearts pure so that we may see God in our lives today. In this chaotic world, we must be peacemakers, channels through which God's mercy, purity, and peace flow.

A Devoted Attitude Towards the World (verses 10-16). Becoming a devoted Christian is not easy. Our society is neither God's nor a friend of God's people. Whether we like the world or not, we will have a conflict with it. Why? Because we are different from the world and have a different attitude.

Reading the Beatitudes, we find them drastically different from the world's perspective. The world praises pride, not humility. The world supports sin, especially if you "escape it." When God reconciles with His enemies, making them His children, they become His enemies. If we were to live according to God's will, we would certainly be persecuted. But we must be certain that suffering is not due to our own foolishness or disobedience.

How True Justice Comes (verses 5:17-20)

When the crowds hear our Lord describe the group of people God has blessed, surely some will say to themselves, “But we can never reach such a high standard of character. How can we possess such righteousness? Where does it come from?” They will think that Jesus’ teachings are relevant to their entire lives. What about Moses and the Law?

In the Law of Moses, God truly revealed His standard of holy living. The Pharisees upheld the Law of Moses and tried to obey it. But Jesus spoke of true righteousness that pleases God, which must surpass the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees—as far as the common people were concerned, the scribes and Pharisees were like the holiest people in the community! If they could not reach that standard, what hope was there for others?

Jesus explains three possible relationships through His own assessment of the Law.

We can try to destroy the Law (verse 17a). The Pharisees thought Jesus was doing just that. First, Jesus’ authority did not come from any recognized leader or school. Jesus taught them with authority, just as the scribes and Pharisees were taught “by authority”.

Jesus, not only in His authority but also in His ministry, seemed to disregard the law. He specifically healed the sick on the Sabbath, ignoring the Pharisees' tradition. Our Lord's companions also appeared to break the law, for Jesus was a friend of tax collectors and sinners.

However, it was the Pharisees who were destroying their own law! According to their tradition, they deprived the world of the right to hear God's word; they lived hypocritically, disobeying the law they claimed to protect. These Pharisees thought they were preserving God's word; in reality, they were corrupting it: rotting it, rendering it lifeless! They rejected Christ's coming into the world to prove that the inherent truth of the law had not entered their hearts.

Jesus clearly stated that His coming was to fulfill the law and help God's people to like it, learn it, and live it. He would not accept the artificial righteousness of religious leaders. Their righteousness was merely a facade. Their religion was a dead ritual, not connected to life. This is man-made; it has not been replicated in the lives of others. It makes them feel proud, not humble; it leads to bondage, not freedom.

We can seek the fulfillment of the law (verse 17b). Jesus Christ fulfilled God's law in every aspect of His life. It was fulfilled in His birth, for He was "born under the law" (Galatians 4:4). All the rituals prescribed for Jewish children were performed by Jesus' parents. He certainly fulfilled the law in His life, for no one could condemn Him for sin. Although He did not submit to the traditions of the scribes and Pharisees, He often did what God commanded in the law. The Father is "pleased" with His Son (Matthew 3:17; 17:5).

Jesus also fulfilled the law in His teaching. This caused Him to clash with religious leaders. When Jesus began His ministry, He found God's living Word, shrouded in artificial traditions and interpretations. He removed this thick "religious" shell, bringing people back to God's Word. Then He opened the Way to them in a new and living way—they had become accustomed to the word "law," not the "core" of their inner life.

But Jesus specifically fulfilled the law through His death and resurrection, and was condemned by the law (Galatians 3:13). He completed the pattern and rituals of the Old Testament, so they no longer needed to be God's people (see Hebrews 9-10). He set aside the old covenant and brought forth a new one.

Jesus did not break the law by attacking it; He destroyed it by fulfilling it! Perhaps an example would clarify this. If I had an acorn, I had two ways to destroy it. I could put it on a rock and crush it with a hammer; or I could plant it in the ground and let it grow into an oak tree. After Jesus died, He tore open the veil of the temple, opening the way into the Holy of Holies (Hebrews 10:19). He broke down the wall separating Jews from Gentiles (Ephesians 2:11-13). Therefore, the law is fulfilled in Christ, no longer requiring a temple built by human hands (Acts 7:48, see also) or religious ceremonies (Colossians 2:10-13).

How can we fulfill the law? By submitting to the Holy Spirit and allowing Him to work in our lives (Romans 8:1-3). The Holy Spirit enables us to experience the “justice of the law” in our daily lives. This doesn't mean we live a perfect, sinless life, but it does mean Christ is within us, giving forth His life through the Holy Spirit (Galatians 2:20).

Whenever we read the Beatitudes, we see the perfect character of Jesus Christ. While Jesus didn't need to mourn His sins, for He was sinless, He was still "a son of sorrow, accustomed to grief" (Isaiah 53:3). He never thirsted or went hungry in His pursuit of righteousness, for He is the Son of God, but He truly delighted in the Father's will and found His satisfaction in doing so (John 4:34). The only way we can experience the righteousness of the Beatitudes is through the power of Christ.

We can strive to fulfill and teach the law (verse 19). This does not mean prioritizing the Old Testament and neglecting the New Testament! 2 Corinthians 3 clearly indicates that our ministry is the New Covenant. However, there is also a proper ministry of the law (read 1 Timothy 1:9 for comparison) that is not contrary to the glorious message of God's mercy. Jesus wants us to understand God's righteousness more, obey it, and share it with others. God's moral law has not changed. Nine of the Ten Commandments are repeated in the New Testament epistles and command believers to observe them (the Sabbath commandment is an exception, used as a symbol of Israel; see Nehemiah 9:14).

We should not refrain from obeying additional laws out of fear. No, believers today observe the inner law because they live in love. The Holy Spirit teaches us the "Word," enabling us to obey. Sin remains sin, and God will always punish sin. In fact, we, people of this age, have even greater responsibility because we are taught and have gained more!

How Justice Works in Daily Life (5:21-48)

Jesus presented six important laws in the Old Testament Law and explained them to His people, who were the light of new life. He made fundamental changes for them, but did not alter God's standards: He addressed attitudes and intentions, not merely outward actions. The Pharisees said righteousness included adherence to certain rules, but Jesus said righteousness was entirely about attitude.

The same applies to sin: the Pharisees listed outward behavioral rules to be followed regarding sin, but Jesus explained that sin originates from inner attitudes. Murder stems from the sin of anger within; adultery from the sin of lust within. Some say they "live according to the principles of the Sermon on the Mount," perhaps unaware that the Sermon on the Mount is far more difficult to follow than the original Ten Commandments!

We can strive to fulfill and teach the law (verse 19). This does not mean prioritizing the Old Testament and neglecting the New Testament! 2 Corinthians 3 clearly indicates that our ministry is the ministry of the New Covenant. However, there is also a proper ministry of the law (read 1 Timothy 1:9 for comparison) that is not contrary to the glorious message of God's mercy. Jesus wants us to understand God's righteousness more, obey it, and share it with others. God's moral law has not changed. We should not refrain from keeping additional laws out of fear. No, believers today keep the inner law because they live in love. The Holy Spirit teaches us the "Word" so that we can obey. Sin remains sin, and God will always punish sin. In fact, we, people of this age, have even greater responsibility because we are taught and have gained more!

Murder (verses 21-26, etc.; Exodus 20:13). I read reports that one in thirty-five deaths in Chicago is murder, and most of these murders are "violent crimes," caused by anger at friends or relatives. Jesus didn't say that anger leads to murder; but He said that anger is murder.

How Justice Works in Daily Life (5:21-48)

Jesus presented six important laws in the Old Testament Law and explained them to His people, the light of new life. He made fundamental changes for them, but did not alter God's standards: He addressed mindset and intention, not merely outward actions. The Pharisees said righteousness included following certain rules, but Jesus said righteousness is all about mindset.

The same is true for sin: the Pharisees listed outward behavioral rules to be followed for sin, but Jesus explained that sin comes from the attitude of the heart. Murder stems from the sin of anger within; adultery from the sin of lust within. Someone who says he "lives according to the principles of the Sermon on the Mount" may not know that the Sermon on the Mount is much harder to follow than the original Ten Commandments!

There is a kind of "righteous anger" toward sin (Ephesians 4:26), but Jesus spoke of anger toward the evil in people. The word He used in Matthew 5:22 means "complete anger, malice nurtured within the heart." Jesus described the nurturing and growth of sin as involving several stages.

First, there is anger without cause. Then this anger erupts into the harsh words "Raca"—"You brainless man!" These harsh words fuel the anger, causing him to retaliate even more angrily, saying, "You fool—traitor!" How foolish anger is. It leads us to replace building with destruction. It strips us of our freedom and makes us prisoners. Murder is the act of hatred taking shape within the heart (1 John 3:15).

Nine of the Ten Commandments are repeated in the New Testament epistles and command believers to keep them (the Sabbath commandment is an exception, used as a symbol of Israel; see Nehemiah 9:14).

Sexual impurity begins with inner lust. Again, Jesus is not saying that lust and adultery are entirely equivalent, therefore, a person might commit adultery. Desire and action are not exactly the same, but spiritually speaking, they are equivalent. The “staring” Jesus refers to is not a casual glance, but a prolonged, lustful gaze. A man can look at a beautiful woman and know she is pretty, but he shouldn't stare at her with lust. The man Jesus describes looked at the woman to satisfy his lustful appetite, to replace his action. This is not accidental; he did it with a plan.

How can we overcome it? By purifying our inner lust (appetite leads to action) and training our physical activity. Clearly, our Lord is not talking about surgery, because that cannot solve the problem at the heart. The eyes and hands are often the two “culprits” in committing “sexual sin,” so they must be strictly controlled. Jesus said, “Address sin immediately and decisively! Not gradually diminish it—cut it off!” Spiritual surgery is more important than physical surgery because bodily sin can lead to eternal judgment. We should recall verses such as (Colossians 3:5; Romans 6:13; 12:1-2; 13:14).

Divorce (verses 31-32, etc.). The Lord addresses the issue of divorce in more detail in (Matthew 19:1-12), which we will discuss further there.

Swearing (verses 33-37, etc.; Muhammad 19:12; Deuteronomy 23:23). It is not the sin of “cursing,” but the sin of affirming the truth of an oath. The Pharisees used every trick in the book to evade the truth, and oaths were among them. They would use God’s holy name to evade the truth, but they would also use neighboring cities, such as Jerusalem, heaven, earth, or parts of the body, to make oaths.

Jesus taught that our conversations should be so honest ,and our character  so true, that we don't need the "crutches " to to get people's to believe . Words depend on character; and oaths cannot compensate for a poor charaer. "Too much talk brings transgression, but to keep one's lips still is wisdom" (Proverbs 10:19). We should be more skeptical when people try to persuade us with many words.

Revenge (verses 38-42, etc.; 24:19-22). The original law was fair; it prevented people from forcing criminals to pay a price higher than their crimes. It also prevented people from accepting revenge. Jesus replaced the law with a mindset: willing to suffer loss himself rather than cause suffering to others. Of course, He applied this analogy only to personal insults, not to groups or nations. Those who seek revenge only make themselves and the other person feel worse; the result is war, not peace.

To be good, "turn your other cheek" means you must remain where you are, not run away. This requires faith and love. It also means we will be hurt, but it is far better to be hurt outwardly than inwardly. But it further means we should try to help sinners. We are vulnerable because they may attack us again; but we are victorious because Jesus is on our side, helping us and building our character. Psychologists tell us that violence arises from weakness, not strength. The gentle person who can love and suffer is strong; only the weak think of themselves and hurt others to protect themselves. They hurt others and then run away to protect themselves.

Love your enemies (verses 43-48, etc.; 19:17-18). The Law teaches nowhere to hate enemies. Exodus 23:4-5 says the exact opposite! Jesus describes our enemies as those who curse us, hate us, and selfishly exploit us. Because Christian love is an act of will, not merely an emotional impulse, He has the authority to command us to love our enemies. After all, Jesus loved us even when we were his enemies (Romans 5:10). We can show this blessing to those who curse us by expressing this love, treating them kindly, and praying for them. We find it easier to love our enemies when we pray for them. Prayer removes the "poison" from our hearts.

Jesus gives several reasons for this admonition. (1) This love is a sign of maturity, proof that we are children of the Father, not just infants. (2) Yes, like God. The Father shares His good things with those who oppose Him. Matthew 5:45 shows that our love “creates an atmosphere” that makes it easy for people to gain our enemies through blessing, turning them into our friends. Love is like the sunshine and rain that the Father so generously sends out. (3) This is a testimony to others. “Treat others well?” That’s a good question. God expects us to stand on a higher level than the lost sinners, not to act like the world, “repaying good with good and evil with evil.” As Christians, we must repay evil with good as an investment of love.

The word “perfect” in Matthew 5:48 does not mean sinless perfection, because that is impossible in this life (although it is a good goal to strive for). It signifies wholeness, maturity, and being a child of God. The Father loves His enemies and tries to make them His children; we should help God to accomplish His will!
